What is secondary containment for an IBC tote?

Secondary containment is a system designed to capture leaks or spills from an IBC tote or bulk liquid container. Spill pallets, sumps, and containment platforms help prevent released liquids from spreading into surrounding work areas.

How much secondary containment is required for an IBC tote?

Containment requirements depend on the material being stored, applicable regulations, and facility conditions. Under certain federal SPCC requirements, containment must accommodate the capacity of the largest single container plus sufficient freeboard for precipitation. Other regulations may require different capacities. Always verify the requirements for your specific application.

What is the difference between an IBC spill pallet and a containment sump?

An IBC spill pallet typically features a raised platform or grating that supports the tote above the containment sump. A sump-only design allows the container to sit directly inside the containment area. Both provide secondary containment, but the best choice depends on dispensing access, loading requirements, and storage conditions.

Can I use the same containment pallet for different chemicals?

Not necessarily. The containment material must be compatible with the liquids being stored. Polyethylene offers resistance to many chemicals, but compatibility should be confirmed before use, especially with solvents and aggressive chemicals.
