What is sustainable packaging?

Beyond just being recyclable, the philosophy behind sustainable packaging considers the entire life-cycle of the container. From manufacturing, to the end of its life, the container’s job is meant to impact the environment as minimally as possible.

These containers are designed with a few things in mind*:

  • Ease of recyclability – Consumers should be able to recycle this packaging relatively easily, and with as few hurdles as possible. This is achieved by utilizing entirely recyclable materials in manufacturing, and through local means such as providing the user with simple avenues to recycle (local plants, pickup options, etc.).
    • The process of manufacturing new containers releases Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) into the air. By recycling already manufactured containers, we can do our part to cut down on the amount of VOCs released during manufacture.
  • Ease of transportation – Heavier packaging requires more fuel to transport. By utilizing light-weight materials like fiber or plastic, fuel consumption can be reduced.
  • Renewability – A container that has once been gently used is not necessarily at the end of its life-cycle. By reconditioning and cleaning these containers, we can extend the life of the packaging further.
  • Reusability – Packaging that can be reused after its initial intended use has been accomplished can assist in reducing the requirement for manufacture of new goods. For example, mason jars containing foods or candles can easily be repurposed for use around the house. Plastic buckets that have been used for transportation of non-toxic goods can be reused as planters, for storage, or for shipping goods back and forth multiple times.

What kinds of sustainable packaging does BASCO offer?

In our ongoing effort to provide effective and efficient containers to North America, BASCO has adopted several kinds of sustainable packaging into our catalog.

  • Plastic containers composed of increased percentages of PCR (postconsumer resin) – By utilizing higher percentages of recycled plastic in the manufacture of plastic containers, BASCO is offering more packaging options that will help you stay compliant with local laws and state regulations.
  • Reconditioned drums and reconditioned IBCs – Drums and IBCs that were once used and discarded by their original owners, these containers have been thoroughly cleaned and reconditioned, extending their lifespan and making them ready for new use.
  • Recyclable plastic and metal containers – From poly barrels, to plastic buckets, steel pails, and metal cans, BASCO’s selection of recyclable metal and plastic containers has never been larger. Each of these containers is capable of being broken down and recycled, putting the raw materials to new use.
  • Lightweight packaging options to reduce fuel costs – Fiber barrels and poly drums are lightweight alternatives to our heavier steel containers, allowing you to ship your product in a more cost effective and environmentally friendly manner.
  • 100% recyclable glass packaging** – Glass is the only material that is 100% recyclable, 100% of the time. Being that it doesn’t leech impurities off of the materials contained within, and the fact that it’s easy to reuse, glass is an excellent container option for anyone who wishes to recycle once finished.

*Note: Not all containers in this category will suit each of the above criteria. Some packaging may suit one or two of the above criteria, while others will fit all bullets listed above. If you’re unsure which type of sustainable packaging is correct for you, call BASCO and we’ll be happy to help you choose the right container to help you stay compliant.

**In order for glassware to be considered “sustainable” it must be recycled at the end of its life-cycle. If you’re using glass packaging, please recycle to stay sustainable and green.
