How to Choose the Right Drum Faucet
Choosing a drum faucet starts with the liquid you're dispensing, but chemical compatibility is only part of the decision. You also need to consider the drum opening, faucet construction, gasket or seal material, viscosity, flow requirements, and how the drum will be positioned during dispensing.
Start with these five factors:
- Check chemical compatibility. Compare the liquid with all faucet materials that may contact it, including the faucet body, gasket, and seals.
- Match the thread size and type. Common drum faucet sizes include 3/4-inch and 2-inch connections, but the thread style must also match the drum opening.
- Choose the appropriate faucet material. Plastic, brass, aluminum, cast iron, and stainless steel faucets offer different compatibility and application characteristics.
- Consider viscosity and flow. Thin, free-flowing liquids and thicker products may require different faucet sizes or dispensing equipment.
- Consider the application. Determine whether you need features such as self-closing operation, padlockability, adjustable positioning, or a safety faucet.
Faucet Style, Flow & Viscosity
The liquid you're dispensing can affect which faucet style works best. Thin, free-flowing liquids such as water, light oils and some cleaners may work well with standard drum faucets designed for controlled gravity dispensing. Thicker or higher-viscosity products may require a larger opening or a gate- or ball-valve style faucet that provides a less restrictive flow path.
Consider how you want the faucet to operate as well. Self-closing faucets automatically return to the closed position when released, while manual gate and ball valves can remain open for continuous dispensing. Depending on the application, you may also want features such as a padlockable handle, adjustable spout, hose connection or drip-control design.
Plastic vs. Metal Drum Faucets
Plastic drum faucets are available in materials such as polyethylene, polypropylene, HDPE, LDPE, LLDPE and Celcon®. Depending on the specific material, gasket and application, plastic faucets may provide chemical resistance for a wide range of liquids while offering lightweight, economical dispensing options.
Metal drum faucets are available in aluminum, brass, cast iron and stainless steel. Metal faucets are commonly selected for durability, industrial applications, specific chemical compatibility, or features such as gate valves and safety-faucet designs.
Neither plastic nor metal is universally the better choice. Select the faucet based on the liquid, chemical concentration, temperature, viscosity, drum connection, faucet body material, gasket/seal material and operating requirements.
When Should You Consider a Safety Faucet?
When dispensing flammable or combustible liquids, faucet selection may involve additional safety requirements beyond chemical compatibility. Depending on the product, container and workplace requirements, a safety faucet may include features such as self-closing operation, flame arresters or other designs intended for controlled dispensing.

Why Faucet Gasket and Seal Material Matters
The faucet body isn't the only material that comes into contact with the product being dispensed. Depending on the faucet design, EPDM, nitrile, PTFE, Viton® or other gasket and seal materials may also be exposed to the liquid.
When checking chemical compatibility, review both the faucet construction material and its wetted gasket or seal materials. Temperature, chemical concentration, exposure time, and product formulation can also affect compatibility.
