What Liner is Right for You? The Best Drum Liner for Your Application

Choosing the Right drum liner can be a confusing task, especially with the wide range of options available. From drum liners to specialty solutions, the variety can make selection feel overwhelming. Drum liners are flexible, typically disposable bags or sleeves made from materials like Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), High Density Polyethylene (HDPE), or Polypropylene (PP). Depending on the size of the drum, liners can range anywhere from 15 to 55 gallons.  They are inserted to create a barrier between the drum and its contents. Additionally, liners come in a range of thicknesses to suit different applications — typically from 4 mil for standard bag liners, to 15 mil for semi-rigid liners, and up to 30 mil for heavy-duty liners. The right thickness depends on the nature of the product being stored or transported.

Drum liners prevent cross-contamination between different batches of materials. This is especially important in industries like pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, and food production, where maintaining product integrity is vital.

Drum liners come in various shapes and materials to suit different applications. Choosing the right type can optimize product flow, ensure full discharge, and reduce waste or contamination. Here’s a breakdown of the most common types:

1. Straight-Sided Liners:

Straight-sided drum liners are one-piece, seamless, and made to closely line the inside of a drum. They are semi-rigid, so they are easy to install and stay put. They have a molded top lip that keeps the liner in place during filling. If you are pumping product from your drums this could be a good option for you. 

2. Round Bottom Liners:

These liners have a circular bottom that conforms to the interior base of the drum perfectly, minimizing air pockets. The seamless curve allows for smooth product flow and complete evacuation, minimizing product loss. These can come in tie-top and fold back variations.

3. Straight Bottom Liners:

Straight bottom liners feature a flat, straight heat-sealed seam at the base where the sides and bottom meet. Think giant sandwhich bag! They provide maximum usable capacity and are a cost-effective item. The only drawback is that the straight seam at the bottom creates folds and pockets that product can get trapped in and be harder to remove. These are designed to hold paints, cosmetics, liquids, food, dyes, and coatings. 

4. Accordion Liners:

These liners look like their name suggests! Their unique accordion, or pleated design, helps the liner to expand and contract easily, allowing them to accommodate different drum heights. You simply lift the liner up or fold it down to fit what you need. These acts as a temporary barrier in your drum and can be disposed of after use.

5. Anti-Static Liners:

Engineered with anti-static additives or conductive materials, these liners are essential for handling flammable powders or liquids in environments where static discharge could pose a hazard. They are made with a distinct pink color to set them apart from other liners. These are designed to hold sealants, chemicals, adhesives, and other flammable products. 

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE)

This is the most widely used material for bag-style drum liners. Made from FDA-compliant resin, it's well-suited for food products, water-based liquids, and other mild products. However, it’s not suitable for use with solvents and shouldn’t be used with products above 120°F.

High Density Polyethylene (HDPE)

This material provides improved resistance to a wider range of chemicals and can tolerate slightly higher temperatures.

Polypropylene (PP)

For even greater chemical resistance and the ability to hot-fill up to 200°F, Polypropylene is the preferred choice.

Using a liner with a UN-rated container that wasn’t part of the original certification can void the drum’s UN approval.
