Which Type of Plastics Can be Recycled?
Our world has become consumed by plastic. While plastic has many valuable uses and is consistently growing in almost every sector, there are still consequences to our environment due to the disposal and single-use plastic products. Approximately 36% of all plastics produced are used in some sort of packaging, and about 85% end up in landfills or as unregulated waste. Worldwide, only 9% of plastic waste is recycled, while 22% of plastic waste is mismanaged. Businesses are predisposed to the value of plastic while consumers are demanding eco-friendly products. While we can continue to fight for biodegradable products, we can also take steps towards sustainability by following the correct procedures of recycling. This blog highlights everyday use plastic products, recycling symbols, and proper disposal.
Plastic Type and Products Used
Plastic is used across many industries including produce packaging, consumer products, electronics and technology, construction, industrial machinery, and many more! However, plastic is primarily used in the packaging industry due to its moldability, versatility, and lightweight structure. Below are some commonly used plastic products that we see every day!
Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET or PETE) – Water bottles, food packaging, household containers
High-density Polyethylene (HDPE) – Shampoo and conditioner bottles, milk jugs, toys, soap bottles, outdoor furniture
Polyvinyl or Vinyl (V) – Clear food packaging, medical equipment, windows, shower curtains, garden hoses
Low-density Polyethylene (LDPE) – plastic grocery bags, condiment containers, shrink wrap
Polypropylene (PP) – Potato chip bags, bottle caps, household cleaning supplies
Polystyrene (PS) – Cutlery, plates, cups, takeout containers, packing peanuts, egg cartons

Plastic Recycling Symbols

These symbols are labeled, typically on the bottom, on every plastic container and bottle. These numbers and symbols represent which material is used to make a specific product and also indicates how you can dispose of it.
Disposal of Plastic Products
Still not sure of the proper disposal process? That’s okay. Just because a certain plastic type can be recycled, doesn’t mean your municipality wants you to fill up your recycling bin with these products. Here are some quick guidelines to follow when recycling:
- Plastic types 1 and 2 can be put in your recycling bin for pickup.
- Hard-to-process plastics, like Styrofoam and shrink wrap, require special handling.
- Plastic type 4, like grocery bags, shouldn’t be put in your recycling bin because it can easily get tangled. Instead, head over to your local grocery store or recycling facility where they will take them for proper recycling.
