If your plant is handling flammable liquids and if you use safety faucets and safety cans, you need Grounding & Bonding wires. OSHA Regulation 29CFR1910.106 (e)(6)(ii), the National Fire Protection Association, and your local codes require you to use bonding and grounding wires.
What are Bonding and Grounding Wires? They are flexible wires that connect containers to each other and to an electrical ground in your plant. They come equipped with different kinds of clips to make positive electrical contact to safely drain static electricity away from your containers and prevent sparks.
Do you have any electricity near your flammables?
You probably do. Whenever you transfer flammable liquids from container to container, static electricity in the air is picked up by the liquid and builds up in the container you're filling. If you touch the container with your bare hand, or let it contact something connected to the ground, the static electricity will flow, and you'll get a spark. (It's like when you touch a metal doorknob after walking across a carpeted floor in your living room, except there are no flammable vapors that could explode there.) In your plant, a spark could cause a huge explosion.
What's the difference between a "Grounding Wire" and a "Bonding Wire"? All grounding and bonding wires are tough and flexible stainless steel cables.
Most of our wires come in 3, 5, 10, and 20 foot long versions. Just remember: when it comes to draining static electricity, shorter is better.
